Cosmonautica is a fun blend of space exploration and life simulation, with you trading, fighting other ships, managing resources and caring for your crew.

As captain of a small washed-up cruiser you’re tasked with putting together a well-balanced crew and guiding them through fun and humurous adventures in space.  You’ll explore the galaxy, trade goods (including rare and illegal items), upgrade your ship with a large variety of rooms, motivate and care for your crew and take part in space battles with other ships.

It’s a great take on the space sim genre, where your crew is just as important as your ship.  The game is still early in development so is not feature complete yet, but with it's quirky sense of humour, plenty of depth and charming graphical style, Cosmonautica is a wonderful place to boldly go.

Avorion is a sci-fi sandbox space game where you explore a galaxy far away from the milky way. Build your own space ship and space station, mine asteroids, and meet other players who are doing the same. Buy and sell with players online or with NPCs.

The game features voxel based graphics, plenty of customization options, smooth controls, and great combat mechanics.  There are a few voxel based space games in development, but Avorion is certainly one of the best and well worth giving a go.  With a bit of work you’ll be able to build a deathstar with some properly secured Jedi-proof thermal exhaust ports.

Space Engine is an impressive space simulation program that lets you explore the universe, from the planet Earth to the most distant galaxies, all in one fluid movement.

The game uses actual astronomical data to recreate areas of the known universe, while distant uncharted regions are generated procedurally.  This means millions of galaxies, trillions of stars, countless planets – all available for exploration. You can land any planet, moon or asteroid and watch alien landscapes and celestial phenomena. You can even pilot starships and atmospheric shuttles.

Space Engine’s Planetarium is not a game, so there are no gameplay mechanics as such, you simply roam the galaxy taking in the beautiful scenery and admiring the vastness of space.  You can fly freely through the universe, but it’s much easier just so click on a desired celestial body and click on the ‘go to object’ tab on the pop-up menu on the bottom left side of the screen (Don’t click ‘land on object’ unless you are near it already).  For maximum enjoyment we’d also recommend using the pop-up menu to speed up time, so you can watch planets going through their orbits, or admire a sunrise on a distant planet.

Space Engine is wonderful simulation of the Universe, with a bit of optimisation it would make an excellent learning aid in schools too, especially with the planned Oculus Rift support.  It’s being funded entirely through donations, with some ambitious goals, including making it into a fully fledged space exploration game or even an MMORPG.  It really is shaping up to be the best way to explore the final frontier (without spending billions on a space shuttle anyway).

NeonXSZ is a great new space combat game, inspired by Descent and Quake, with RPG elements such as loot, levelling and upgrades.  Gameplay is fast paced and fun, with ships remarkably agile and handling similarly to Descent, while combat feels more like Quake.  You start off with fairly weak fire-power, but as you upgrade your ship, you’ll become a force to be reckoned with.

The customisation and upgrade system in NeonXSZ is particularly impressive, with dozens of ships to choose from and over 700 Upgrades available through loot drops and trading, you’ll be able to make your ship truly unique.

NeonXSZ is an excellent slice of space combat, that takes the Descent formula and adds so much more.  It also offers a massive amount of re-playability thanks to the world, upgrades and enemy AI, all being completely procedurally generated.

The game is currently on Steam Greenlight, and only needs another 2000 votes to get Greenlit.  There will also be a big update to the game soon, which will add lots of new environments and challenge arenas that you can gain control of once you beat challenging, scripted battles.
