Alpha Beta Gamer

Pixel Piracy is a side-scrolling 2d, RTS sandbox roguelike pirate simulation game that’s currently on Steam Greenlight. The player must sail their ship over a number of procedurally generated sea zones, battling pirates and other hostile forces, recruiting and disciplining crew members, and upgrading their ship. Combat takes place in pausable real time, and if the ship is destroyed or the crew lost, the game ends, requiring the player to restart.

It’s a great game, with a beautifully animated pixel art style and a nice sense of humor. It’s a whole lot of fun attacking enemy ships with projectiles, then boarding and looting them. Forget Assassins Creed 4, Pixel Piracy is where the real gold is.

Nax of the Universe is an Action RPG that focuses on having a fast, fluid combat, made by @theRaonak . It’s a joy to play, wandering around the retro 2D world, laying waste to enemies with some badass sword skills. It’s got a nice, fluid fighting style, that allows you to block, teleport, change weapons on the fly, and pull off combos. There are also plenty of RPG elements, such as loot, Mario-esque coins littered around the levels, and an XP and Leveling up system.

Nax of the Universe is still very early in development, but it’s shaping up to be a great little game, with it’s mixture of 2D RPG elements and fluid fighting mechanics. It feels like (Devil May Crys) Dante has 'blacked-up’ and invaded the 2D Hyrule world of early Zelda games!

Super Pokémon Eevee Edition is a fangame created to recapture the nostalgia of classic Pokémon games, made by @theRaonak

It’s got a wonderful retro art style, reminiscent of the early Gold/Silver/Crystal games, but adds a Final Fantasy style battle system and an interesting story featuring god-like entities called hypervisors. There’s also a host of other nice additions to the Pokémon formula, such as pooled PP, unlimited movesets, crafting, achievements and corrupted Pokémon. It’s a great game, with an excellent blend of game mechanics and a fitting tribute to the early Pokémon games.

Slay The Beast revolves around a gloriously simple and unique core concept, it’s a fighting game where one player controls a huge boss-level monster and the other players control puny (but respawning) heroes. The heroes then try and ‘Slay The Beast’, using teamwork, tactics and a variety of special moves.

It’s still in early Alpha, so it’s still lacking some features, but the core gameplay, art style and fighting mechanics are solid, we’d definitely recommend giving it a try.

Super Mega Man 3 is an excellent fan made Mega Man game, lovingly made by Negative1. It’s faithful to the old classic Mega Man games and retains all the wonderful 8-bit art style.

No longer must your Pokémon be squashed into 2 dimensions! Pokémon 3D is a fan-made recreation of the old Pokémon games Gold/Silver by Nintendo/GameFreak.

You can do everything that you could do in the original games, catch, train and fight Pokémon, collect items and explore towns in 3D. You can even play with a friend in LAN co-op.

It’s a fun game that lovingly recreates the feeling of the original games, but adds an extra dimension. Pokémon 3D is currently under development and features are being added frequently.

Savage: The Shard Of Gosen is a retro platformer with RPG elements, inspired by Conan the Barbarian, Zelda II and Gargoyle’s Quest. It has a varied, open world to explore, an interesting story, magic and muscles, day/night cycle, overworld hunting/tracking, a fun melee system and some mild RPG elements (item use, levelling up, gear, crafting and the like).

Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch is a free project created by CutmanMike and a Team MM8BDM. It’s a retro styled FPS based on the 8-bit Mega Man games. It includes every robot master as a playable skin, over 50 weapons and maps inspired by the original games, 32 player online play, a singleplayer botmatch campaign and much more. If you’re a fan of online first person shooters or Mega Man, you have to give Mega Man 8-bit Deathmatch a go!

Black Ice is a Hack and Shoot – that is, it’s a hack and slash RPG about hacking that utilises first person shooter controls. It’s like Borderlands/Diablo meets Tron, where your goal is to find and hack the biggest server of them all to release an imprisoned AI. It features fully randomized loot, a levelling system, minions and more.

When you start the game, you are surrounded by a variety of relatively easy to hack coloured servers, but stray further afield and things can get much tougher. Walk up to a Server and right click to start Hacking and a load of nasty minions will spill out of it and start attacking you. Complete the hack to earn XP and collect some lovely loot to aid your future Hacking attempts. It’s an addictive little game with a great art style, and well worth a try.
