Northward is a wonderful pixel art co-operative management game set in an atmospheric Nordic landscape, inspired by The Settlers, Transport Tycoon and Banished, where you build a settlement, expand, gather resources, build defenses and steadily make your way towards the mountains in the North.
The Pre-Alpha Demo is still very early in development and doesn’t feature co-op play, but it does offer a taster of the basics of the gameplay in Northward.  Once you figure out the what to do, it’s a fairly simple and fun way to manage building the town, with villagers commanded to work in different buildings where they’ll continue to work autonomously.   Once you've created a few arrow towers and fully stacked them up with arrows, just click on the skull at the top of the map, and you’ll have to defend against a few waves of enemies.  It is a fairly short demo, but it does a good job of showing off the gameplay and cool retro visuals.
Management games are usually a solitary affair, so co-op is a welcome addition in Northward.  In the full game you’ll be able to plan and build your settlement together, (hopefully) working in harmony to tackle catastrophic events.  This co-op gameplay combined with the wonderful pixel art graphical style and easily approachable settlement building make Northward an enticing prospect.  Go North!

Snot is a quirky and funny arcade action-adventure game where you play a reluctant little snail that seeks to learn the mysteries of the universe and his existence.

It’s a fun arcade-style romp with metroidvania leanings, charming character design, tricky level design, secrets and some interesting special abilities unlocked by combining various shells with elements.  The dev also plans to add multiplayer, a world editor, new game modes, 9 huge worlds and 30 different bosses to the final game.

Snot’s shaping up to be a great piece of retro gaming with a great sense of humor.  We’d certainly love to see more of this charming little mollusc.  It’s snot bad, snot bad at all!

Ninja Pizza Girl is a side-scrolling platformer inspired by Mirror’s Edge and the 16-bit classic Sonic the Hedgehog, with a story based on bullying, emotional resilience, and pizza delivering ninjas!

In Ninja Pizza girl you play as a delivery girl in a cyberpunk dystopia where you have to deliver pizza in the shortest amount of time possible, all the while defending yourself from other evil delivery teens out to bully you.  The idea of the game actually came from real life where a young girl was learning kung fu and delivering pizzas, hence ‘Ninja Pizza Girl’.

The parkour platforming of Ninja Pizza Girl focuses on joy and exhilaration, not a brutal exercise in masochism, making for a game that’s that’s easy to enjoy but tough to master.  We’ll have a stuffed crust with extra parkour, hold the anchovies.

The Detail is a crime noir adventure set in a modern American city that combines the emotional impact of Telltale Games' The Walking Dead crossed with the themes of a realistic crime drama like HBO's The Wire.

Gameplay is centred around a bitter veteran detective investigating a brutal gangland murder and a reformed criminal trying to protect his family, the player is forced to make tough choices and deal with the resulting consequences of these moral dilemmas.

The graphic novel visual style is wonderful - creating a stylish and gritty city for you to explore, full of interesting characters.  The Detail also promises multiple branching storylines affected by your decisions and multiple playable characters - allowing you to experience both sides of the law.

The Telltale Games' The Walking Dead gamesinfluence is obvious in the Beta Demo, but it also shares a lot of DNA with Heavy Rainoffering up a dark storyline where everything you do has a consequence - whether it’s snap judgements made in the heat of the action or more considered investigative decisions.

The Detail is shaping up to be a wonderful blend of mature storylines, point & click gameplay, gritty crime drama, graphic novel noir style and real decisions.  Well worth checking out.

Mighty Tactical Shooter is a an old school 2D arcade shoot-em-up with a major twist – turn based combat

The combat is a clever system that pauses the game and allows you to visually predict how your shots and movement will play out, allowing you to make it through situations that wouldn’t be possible in a normal shooter.  As well as the standard missiles and lasers, you also have added to some very cool gravity based weaponry, which allows you to bend the paths of bullets to make the enemy shoot themselves.

The turn based combat system allows for plenty of depth, especially when paired with the RPG-like levelling system.  Even though it’s turn based, Mighty Tactical Shooter has a great flow to the combat, and the pixel-art graphical style is excellent.  Imagine Gradious with Fallout 3‘s V.A.T.S. system and a touch of FTL and you’re nearly there.

Xoi San is a stylish silhouetted 2d side scrolling combat game where you assume the role of a bushman on a quest to find and return a baby rhino to it’s mother, after being stolen by poachers.

As well as some impressive fighting skills and a spear, you also have the ability to call on help from local wildlife.  As well as riding on the back of a rhino, you can call on Leopards, Elephants and giant Eagles to charge in or swoop down and maim your enemies.

With it’s striking visual style, satisfying combat and animal helpers, Xoi San is well worth a play, and what better motive can there be than returning a baby rhino to it’s mother?

Rampage Knights is a chaotic cooperative beat ‘em up with randomized dungeon crawling, exploration, customisation, lots of weaponry, magic powers and loot.

You play as a hero trapped by a spell in a magical forest where all paths lead to a nearby ruined castle - the source of the black magic covering the land.

Rampage Knights features randomised roguelite gameplay inspired by The Binding of Isaac mixed with classic melee combat from games like Golden Axe.  Each run lasts around 60mins, starting with a bare hero who evolves and changes (visually and gameplay-wise) as you find better weapons, items, magic powers and fight harder and harder monsters. Eventually you reach the final boss at the bottom of the pit (or your death).

When you die, you may loose your weapons and items, but you keep your combat experience.  You're resurrected in a camp, full of travellers who you met in the woods, who offer a variety of useful customisation & gameplay options to aid your progress.

It’s a fun game, that offers old-school co-op hack n slash action, with loads of upgrades, loot and weaponry in randomly generated bite size (and bloody) chunks.

Astrons is a fun adventure game where you explore strange alien terrain using vehicles which are created from scratch by you.

The Tech Demo is still early in development, but it allows you to build ships, edit maps, and take your creations out for a spin.  The ship building is pretty intuitive and fun, with you able to easily create all crafts of all manner of shapes and sizes.  And, depending on how well you’ve constructed your creation, driving and flying them around the maps is very enjoyable.  You’re also able to drill through the terrain, using a rather odd looking multidirectional drill, burrowing deep into the planets core.

It’s a joy experimenting with various ship designs in the Astrons Tech Demo, and there are lots of additions planned for the full release, including multiplayer, story mode, hundreds of new gadgets and Steam Workshop support. It’s perfect for fun easily accessible vehicle building, like 2D LEGO, in space!

Here we have Schein, a new weird but wonderful puzzle platformer developed as the pilot indie game of Zeppelin Studio based in Austria.  The aim of the game is to find your lost child amongst the dark, folk-lore style swamp, using the elements of light, and your legendary wisp to reveal various puzzles and obstacles.

The game has a very unique mechanic system where certain scopes of light will reveal certain platforms and dangers, and the player must select the right colour of light at just the right time to proceed.  This game will keep you entertained, challenged and intrigued as you run through the perilous land of Schein.

Currently the game is still in development but Zeppelin have released a Beta Demo to sate our thirst for Schein.  The Demo is one level of puzzles and the beginning of a story emerging, and is thoroughly enjoyable.  It’s sure to keep you wanting more and the only saddening part is when it ends and you’re unable to carry on going!
