Avast ye landlubbers! Pirates Online Rewritten is an ongoing project to recreate and improve upon the now defunct Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean Online, the fun piratey themed MMO that shut down on Sept 2013.

This is a fan made project that uses Disney Interactive’s POTCO assets and content (with their permission) that’s strictly non-profit orientated and 100% free to play – it has to be or Disney will sue. This means that Pirates Online Rewritten is being created by devs who are genuinely passionate about the game, and it will be an MMO geared towards gameplay and fun, instead of fleecing players out of their cash with micro-transactions.

All going well, Pirates Online Rewritten could be a great MMO, be warned though, pirate games can be quite addictive – they say once ye lose yer first hand, ye get hooked!

Eclipse War Online is a new card collecting MMORPG with over 700 cards to collect and the ability for your character to transform into an monster in the game.

This transformation ability dramatically changes the game, with a selection of monsters that’s wide and varied, including Ent-style creatures, behemoths, sorcerers, ogres, insects and birds. It’s an interesting gameplay mechanic, and means that there’s always a new monster to play as and a new skill-set to master.

As well as monster card collecting, there’s also arena and AoS Based PvP combat for players to do battle . Eclipse War Online is free to play, but the developers promise that it is not going to be Pay to Win, with all game items available through in-game currency.

Shards is an interesting indie sandbox MMORPG with huge modding potential being developed by Citadel Studios, a team made up of developers from Ultima Online, DAOC and Warhammer Online.

It’s a seriously ambitious game, allowing players can fully customize their experience with extensive modding tools that will allow them to create and run their own MMO, with their own rules, themes and systems. You’ll be able to create any style of MMO you like, such as steampunk, fantasy, horror or sci-fi. The possibilities seem to be endless, if everything works as planned this could be the Little Big Planet of MMOs.

Treasure Arena is an online battle-arena that looks and plays like a 4 Player Legend of Zelda deathmatch.

Levels are compact and littered with a variety of weapons, from bows to rocket launchers, and a variety of monsters. When a player kills another player or a monster, they’ll drop coins which the player can then pick up, whoever ends up with the most coins by the end wins the match.

It’s a great game with fast and fun gameplay and a nice retro pixel art visual style. Perfect for a short blast of pixelated multiplayer mayhem.

Skyforge is a beautiful looking, highly-stylized Sci-Fi Fantasy MMORPG featuring fast paced and dynamic combat inspired by console action games. The game is set in a universe of gods and heroes, who utilize futuristic technologies to fight off dangerous creatures and protect their planet against space invasions. Throughout the game players will develop their immortal warriors into powerful gods dominating the battlefield as invincible giants.

As well as offering players the chance to play as gods, it also intends to offer a “visually stunning and highly visceral action-combat with a unique open class system and limitless character development” and “combat inspired by console action games”. So it should look pretty, have plenty of customisation options with fast paced, fluid combat.

It’s also worth noting that the team behind Skyforge have some considerable pedigree, being developed by Allods team (Allods Online) and Obsidian (The Stick of Truth, KOTOR2, Fallout: New Vegas).

Skyforge is certainly an interesting prospect for MMO fans, the rich world and backstory of Skyforge certainly sound compelling, and really, who wouldn’t want to play as an asskicking god?

Celestian Tales: Old North is a great loking RPG featuring moral-driven storyline, six points of view, multiple personal arcs, and beautifully hand-drawn art.

Unlike other fantasy RPGs the storyline does not revolve around a dimension-defying sorcerer or an awakened godlike creature of ancient myths, but the darkness lurking in every man’s heart. Grey morals, questionable justice, and blind faith are among the main themes of Celestian Tales. You’ll play the game from 6 different viewpoints, as 6 different characters, spanning 3 decades, with the players growing and the land changing over time. With no real black and white choices, the developers hope is that when you reach the end of the game, you’ll ask yourself “Did I do the right thing?”

The Prototype shows off a small section of gameplay, allowing you to explore a forest and the first town. You’ll take part in some turn based battles which are fairly standard RPG battles at the moment, but hopefully it will become more complex as time goes on. The visuals are wonderful though, with it’s hand drawn backdrops and sprite-based characters, this isn’t just another RPG Maker game, it’s coded in Unity, and all the better for it.

The promise of a complex moral-driven storyline, playable from 6 different perspectives all wrapped up in a wonderful hand-drawn visual style, make Celestian Tales: Old North a very exciting prospect – an old school RPG with a new way of thinking.

The Repopulation is an interesting new Sandbox MMO that sees the remnants of the human race fighting for survival on the planet of Rhyldan against some rather nasty indigenous lifeforms and each other.

The game has a big focus on freedom, with no preset paths through the game and a variety of combat oriented and non-combat activities to pursue. Players can build their own cities, form nations, elect mayors, take part in multi-stranded generated missions with branching outcomes, learn and upgrade skills, fit their character with augmentations, raise pets (Tamed, Genetically Engineered and Robotic), and operate a variety of vehicles. PvP engagements can be combat and non-combat oriented, with the player base divided into 3 factions, and the 3rd faction able to splinter off into smaller factions.

The Repopulation is certainly an ambitious MMO, that looks like it might actually deliver on it’s promise of offering an amount of freedom rarely seen in gaming. With the final round of Alpha testing taking part this month, Beta sign-ups for the next phase have begun.

Eat Drink Slay is a great little retro hack and slash RPG, designed to be played during short breaks, a coffee break RPG. It features some wonderful retro visuals, lots of loot, a choice of 5 different character classes, shops, a nice selection of enemies and some nice little touches, like the C64 loading screen. It’s a fun little game and an excellent use of your coffee break!

Heroes of Frontier is a fun, well animated causal RPG game designed to be played on the go on iOS devices.

It features a comprehensive battle system that’s designed from the ground up for iOS, XP levelling, customisable weaponry and equipment, different character classes, big & bold character design, and the ability to recruit friends into your party. It’s a highly enjoyable, bite size RPG, perfect for playing on a mobile device.
