Counter Spell combines elements of classic role playing games with modern tactical and stealth-based shooters, all wrapped up in a wonderful retro aesthetic that makes it feel like a first person Zelda shooter at times.

We first covered Counter Spell last year and development has come along nicely since then. In the game you customise your character by selecting unique spells, perks and abilities then make your way through single player quests, co-op or competetice multiplayer. As you play you’ll collect lots of lovely loot, and your abilities allow for some uniquely tactical gameplay, with you able to lay traps, use powerful items or just hurl fireballs at your enemies.

There’s also a detailed level editor, allowing you to easily create and share levels with others, you can even take control of the levels monsters to really challenge your friends.

It’s a fun game, with a great blend of RPG and FPS action, which allows you to play, create and share, as well as maim, burn and kill. Spelltacular.

Miko Gakkou Monogatari: Kaede Episode is a 3D Japanese adventure RPG set in a world where humans and youkai (supernatural Japanese monsters) coexist with one another. You play as a shrine maiden student in a story that tackles the topic of falling in love.

The game is a charming and eccentric anime-like 3D RPG, with a light hearted atmosphere and a storyline that revolves around your character spending her winter holiday inside the school campus, and falling in love with a mysterious character.

The Alpha Demo is really more of a teaser, giving you a small peek at what Ayanoyama miko school is like. Allowing you to walk around and interact with other characters, with plenty of dialog to go through all wonderfully voice acted in Japanese with English translations.

Miko Gakkou Monogatari: Kaede Episode looks set to be a fun and whimsical Anime-style RPG, and a refreshing change from huge swords and behemoths.anime

Tales of Rhayne is a great looking Multiplayer Action RPG, inspired by WoW, DOTA, Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights, with up to 10v10 PvP and co-operative play, that aims to re-invent the levelling up system of RPGs.

The game features 32 playable characters, with a variety of skills, spells and special abilities at their disposal. As you play you build up your character, but you can also acquire permanent injuries or even die (permanently). Death does’t totally reset your progress though, you’ll keep your gold which can be used to choose a better starting character.

As you build up your character, you don’t just gain hit points, you get new abilities, skills or armor. Every time you level up, you’ll be able to choose from 2 randomly selected special abilities, which makes each player build unique to that play-though.

Tales Of Rhayne is still very early in development and still a little rough around the edges, but it already looks great and features some innovative ideas and satisfyingly meaty combat. It’s a fun game, and an ambitious reinvention of the action RPG.

Divine Souls is a fast paced real-time action RPG with an extensive combat combo system, PvE dungeon instances, 4 unique classes, lots of loot and a MOBA-Style PvP battle Arena.

In combat the combo system is easy to pick up and allows for some pretty spectacular fights. Completing dungeons (of various modes) will earn you XP and loot, which allow you to level up and customise your character. You’re able to form parties with friends to tackle the dungeons or enter the fun MOBA-Style battle arena for some fast paced PvP action.

While Divine Souls isn’t exactly spectacular in the graphical department, the combo combat system is fun, with no need to wait for cooldown timers, making for combat that’s mentally and visually engaging.

Necropolis is a rather awesome standalone Doom Total conversion First Person Brawler with RPG elements, set in a very stylish black and white world full of weird and wonderful monsters trying to rip you to (papery) shreds.

The game is still far from complete, but it’s already great fun, with it’s cool paper-craft visual style, 3 different playable classes (Mage, Huntress & Cleric), each with their own type of weaponry (Magic, Bow & Sword) and a large variety of enemies to slice your way through to gain lots of loot. Blood-soaked paper-craft fun.

Planet Explorers is an impressive open world voxel based sandbox adventure RPG set on a distant planet, that allows players to alter the terrain, customize their character, combine and create weapons, vehicles, and buildings and fight massive enemy creatures.

It’s the year 2287, and you and a bunch of other survivors have crash-landed on the planet Maria, an unforgiving land filled with deadly creatures. Now the survivors must explore, gather, build, create, fight, and ultimately, conquer the land.

Planet Explorers features a single player story line as well as random single and multiplayer adventure maps, with a mission system that features NPCs giving the player goals to achieve to advance the storyline. It can be played from 3rd and 1st person perspectives, with players will be able to customize their character, create weapons, vehicles, and buildings and battle multitudes of enemies of varying intelligence and defend the remnants of the colonists.

It’s a great looking game with an impressive scope, an interesting Sci-Fi setting, a plenty of crafting options, epic battles and a huge planet for you to explore and ultimately conquer.

Velvet Sundown is a very different type of role-playing game, a game where you actually take on the role of the character - a guest on a luxury yacht - with you and four other players building a 45 minute long story.
Each time you play Velvet Sundown you’ll be set up with a new identity for you to embody, interacting and chatting with other players, using charm and charisma to convince other players to follow your suggestions, allowing you to fulfil your objectives. Whether you’re a journalist, playboy, businessman or international spy, you each have your own objectives which can only be achieved with social interactions with other players.
Chatting is facilitated through a text-to-chat system, which means that everyone sounds a bit like Siri, but also means that there are no preformed conversation paths, you can say whatever you want to whoever you want. This allows for some wonderful free-form story-crafting, with love, scandal and espionage all commonplace on this luxury yacht. Much like our recently featured Storium, Velvet Sundown is a game that thrives on social interaction and creativity, as such, if you’re playing with the right people it can be a blast.

Bounty Hounds Online is a Sci-Fi MMORPG with with large scale 100vs100 battles, daily and weekly PvP and PvE events, futuristic vehicles and transforming mech-pets – including velociraptors, dragons and wolves.

It’s a good looking game that put’s a large emphasis on the pets, with them all able to transform into an epic robot form. The game features 6 playable classes with unique combat abilities. You can also craft, upgrade your gear, ride a futuristic motorcycle, or glide on a hoverboard across our beautifully designed maps. Form guilds and alliances and participate in territory wars, as well as defending against T-Rex invasions.

Super Awesome Quest is an interesting new RPG for iOS and Android with unique token-flipping combat and an in-depth crafting system.

The token-flipping combat looks pretty interesting and well suited to touch-screen devices, offering up a simple, fun and tactical fighting system. It also offers up regular RPG staples such as crafting, equipment, multiple playable characters and loot drops.

With it’s unique combat system Super Awesome Quest is looking like a fun an innovative way of making an RPG work on touch screen devices. It’s due for release in September, but you’ll be able to play it early by signing up for the Beta.
