Alpha Beta Gamer

The Consuming Shadow is a procedurally-generated horror adventure game with a Lovecraftian theme and gameplay inspired by FTL: Faster Than Light, Eternal Darkness, and the board game Arkham Horror.

The game is played from a 2D, side on perspective, with characters being depicted through their silhouettes, making the game feel like you’re playing through a graphic novel. The game features procedurally generated dungeons to explore and fight your way through, roguelike perma-death mechanics, random events, upgrades, sanity mechanics and an interesting storyline.

Try not to go mad and shoot yourself. This is important!

Velvet Sundown is an intriguing new multiplayer game from Tribe Studios that sees 4 people having to carry out individual quests through interactions with NPCs and the other players.

The devs claim that each 40 min game will be unique, with the players creating the experience. With its interesting multiplayer interactions, international playboys, high heels, luxury yachts and beautiful sunsets, it’s worth making reservations aboard Velvet Sundown.

Fabula Mortis is a great new Steampunk FPS set in featuring twisted characters from old fairy tales, currently on Steam Greenlight.

Featuring characters such as Alice (shown above), Rouge (Red Riding Hood), Wulf (self explanatory) and ROB (Tin Man?) that encourage different playstyles, the game has fast paced combat with big beefy weapons that recalls old school FPS games such as UNREAL Tournament and Quake.

The game also looks visually stunning, with lots of nice little touches, it’s a joy to roam around the twisted Wonderland that developers Deadghost have created.

Zombie Grinder is a retro cooperative multiplayer arcade game, inspired by Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Super Smash TV!

The game features player customisation, achievements, ranking, player-customization, RPG style stats and a host of weapons to blow away the zombie hordes. Zombie Grinder also features a host of different multiplayer game modes, such as co-operative levels, ‘horde’ style matches, deathmatch and capture the ‘bag’

Cornerstone is an open world action adventure game inspired by Viking culture, The Legend of Zelda games (Wind Waker most notably) and Dark souls that has achieved it’s kickstarter goal and has been Greenlit on Steam.

Cornerstone encourages exploration. The world is structured similar to Wind Waker with a series of islands connected within vast ocean with almost every areas is accessible from the start. You travel between islands on a (fast travel enabled) boat and explore these islands you will discover useful tools and abilities to help you on your upcoming challenges.

Game progression doesn’t revolve around increasing stats and gathering XP. You explore the world in a nonlinear way, with some areas locked off until you have the correct equipment, as in a zelda game.

Although we’ve mentioned Zelda a lot, Cornerstone is very much its own game and not simply a Zelda rip-off. The likeable main character (Tyrim) has plenty of character and it’s a joy to explore the beautifully crafted world.

We covered Amygdala while it was in Alpha, you control a disembodied head, shooting enemies, pooping bricks and killing wizards to make a magic meat body in this fun and entertaining platformer.

Amygdala is now in Beta and the devs are looking for Beta testers to help fine tune their game. Beta testers will receive access to regular build updates, a full DRM free copy of the game upon release on Android and PC, and DLC/expansions for free.

X-Speed is a fast paced, futuristic racer similar to WipEout and F-Zero. There’s a nice selection of ships to choose from, all upgradeable using credits won through races and power-ups can be found around the track. Take part in races, tournaments or Arena Deathmatches, with online multiplayer due to be implemented before release. It still needs development, but the game already has a great sense of speed, a clean visual style, a suitably techno/dance soundtrack, good controlsl, and most importantly, it’s fun to play.

The game is currently on Steam Greenlight, and still needs a bit of work before it’s released. One thing the Devs are keen to do is change the name, as they’re not very keen on ‘X-Speed’, so if you have any ideas, get in touch with them (@DamienSturdy), and you might get your name in the Credits.

Heroes and Generals is an ambitious MMO FPS with RTS elements that’s been Greenlit on Steam. On one level it’s a team based FPS action game where players can engage in combat using a variety of characters, customizable weapons and vehicles such as tanks, fighter planes and even the mighty bicycle!

Players can also play at a strategic level commanding other players or entire groups in Assault Teams into combat. On top of that the strategic players have to manage resources and reinforcements in order to secure key locations on the battle map.

Homeworld is Back!

Homeworld: Shipbreakers is an RTS made by the original creators of Homeworld and is a prequel to the Original. It’s the first Homeworld game to be made in 10 years, and was only possible thanks to a partnership between Blackbird Interactive and Gearbox.

Battlefield 4 is now in open Beta and free to pay for all, no need to pre-order BF4. Get an early taste of the Conquest and Domination game modes on the Siege of Shanghai map. It’s very pretty and it's available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
