Her Majesty’s SPIFFING is a highly amusing point and click adventure game, packed with throwaway sight gags, inside jokes and cheesy puns that recall the glory days of classic LucasArts adventures.

You take control of the very ‘British’ accented Captain Lee English, on a mission to go where no man has gone before and expand the British Empire once again.  Crucially, the voice acting for Captain Lee English is excellent, making you immediately warm to his charmingly boisterous character.

The prototype ties around 10 minutes to play through, and although it’s still very early in development, the graphical polish and animation is already impressive.  As well as giving you a taster of the intuitive interface and gameplay, it also manages to pack in plenty of genuinely funny gags, as well as a short QWOP-stlye section where you pilot the ship (badly).

The point and click-style adventure genre has had a resurgence recently, thanks to games like The Walking DeadBroken Age and The Wolf Among Us, but Her Majesty’s SPIFFING really looks set to resurrect the spirit of the long dead LucasArts adventure games.  Great animation, great voice acting, great gags and Great Britain!

What would you do if a celebrity started pretending to do your job, badly and got paid a fortune for it?  Well DJ and music producer Dr. Kucho has had this very problem, in the form of crap celebrity DJs who just turn up and press a button, and has decided to make a Ghosts ‘n Goblins-style retro arcade game out of it – Ghosts ‘n DJs.

In Ghosts ‘n DJs you play Dr. Kucho, as he battles his way through a rather tough side scrolling retro action game, fighting off hordes of naff DJs such as ‘Paris Sheratan’ and ‘Pitbullshit’.  It’s no masterpiece but it fun to play, feels a lot like it’s GnG inspiration and does make you smile – especially when you see some of the DJs combat moves.

Still very early in development, we’d love to see this expanded on, with more crap DJs to beat up and more bonafide DJs to play as.  As it stands though, it’s a fun and challenging slice of retro action with it’s tongue firmly in it’s cheek.

Mutiny! is a chaotic multiplayer pirate brawler that lets you sail the 77 seas with a crew of friends, with chaotic combat, weapons, power-up, pig riding and even the ability to sail your ship and fire cannons at enemy ships!

In Mutiny! your ship is your battle ground, as you and your friends fend off hordes of attacking pirates with gameplay that’s inspired by Powerstone, Super Smash Bros, Bomberman and Fat Princess.  There’s a nice selection of weaponry and power-ups, including a captains hat which turns you into the ships captain and a pig which you can ride around deck, crushing the invading enemy.

What’s also impressive is the amount of interactable objects on your ship, with you able to load and fire cannons, swing from ropes and even take to the wheel to captain your ship, firing your cannons and sinking your attackers fleet.16 player local multiplayer will be available through the use of controllers and Mobile Sync (Turning your phone into a controller), so life at sea won’t be lonely.

With chaotic combat, cool power-ups and intractable environments, life on the ocean wave certainly isn’t dull – it’s a (cannon) blast!

Windlands is a first person action adventure game where you explore a beautifully crafted half-ruined world inhabited by giant war golems, jumping and swinging from one point to another, using the grappling hooks you have at your disposal.

The game’s main focus is it’s freedom in movement, with a vast open world where you can super jump, wall jump, and grappling hook your way anywhere you please.

Although not currently implemented, the finished game will also be populated with huge Attack on Titan-style golems for you to battle against.  But for now it’s fun to just jump and swing your way around this impressive and vibrant open world.

Retro-Pixel Castles is an RTS with elements taken from genres such as town management sims, roguelikes and tower defense games.

It’s not a game you can win, you just get better at prolonging the inevitable death of your civilization.  As you play, you’ll unlock more content, such as, additional buildings, more items and access to more units to control, you can use these unlocks on your next attempt to keep your villagers alive.

We first covered Retro-Pixel Castles last month, and had fun playing around with the map editor, but since then a new build has been released which allows you to actually play with your tiny civilisation and RPC has started a Kickstarter and Greenlight campaigns.

Once you figure out how to build and gather resources (click on the small ‘+’ sign next to the hammer when building the town centre),  then the resource gathering and building is remarkably easy.  Instead of clicking on each and every villager and giving them a job, you simply ‘paint’ areas of the map you want to gather resources and select sites for your buildings, then your villagers will simply carry out the work as they see fit.  It’s a simple and intuitive way of managing your tiny followers that removes any unnecessary micro-management (even if you are managing micro people).

The Retro-Pixel Castles Tech Demo is still very early in development, with a handful of maps to play on and a map editor, but it certainly gives a good taster of things to come.  Your tiny pixelated people may inevitably be doomed, but you’ll have an enjoyable time prolonging their death.

Phantasmal is a particular favorite at Alpha Beta Gamer, its terrifying procedurally generated mansion still freaks us out every time we play it, so we’re always happy when a new build comes along.  As well as a host of improvements, the new build also comes with the announcements of a Greenlight and Kickstarter campaigns, so if you love getting your ass kicked by this roguelike FPS nightmare, check them out now.

For those unaware, we first covered Phantasmal back in May, and loved the claustrophobic level design, pant-wettingly horrific monsters, varied weaponry, brutal difficulty and the well implemented procedurally generated level design.  All of which works together to make each playthough as terrifying as the last, with you never knowing what macabre horrors lurk behind the next corner.

There’s plenty of weaponry in Phantasmal, but you’ll have to be smart if you’re going to last for longer than 5 minutes.  Stay very quiet and use your weapons and flash-light only when necessary and you MIGHT survive this procedurally generated nightmare.  You’ll still need a steady nerve and a LOT of luck on your side though.  Make no bones about it, this is a very hard game!

Heroes Never Lose is a fun hero-themed Mean Bean Machine-style action-puzzler with a super-powered twist, excellent pixel art animation and a great sense of humor.

Gameplay will be familiar to anyone who’s played SEGA‘s classic ’Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine’ or ’Puyu Puyu’.  Your aim is to demolish your blocks in as large a combo as possible which then sends large clumps of blocks over to your opponents side and disrupting their gameplay.  Each wonderfully animated superhero has their own special moves to spice up the gameplay, with inventive ways to sabotage your opponent.

It’s a fun and well crafted take on the falling-block puzzle genre, bristling with color and vibrant characters that really add some personality to the game.  A perfectly programmed pleasantly preposterous pixelated puzzler.

Spacewrights is a tactical sci-fi 2D spaceship simulation game in a similar vein as FTL, where you explore, build, and create a galactic empire, with multiple highly customisable ships.

The Alpha Demo is very much like FTL, featuring the games endless ‘Survival mode’, which sees you trying to survive for as long as possible against a random array of enemy ships.  As you progress, you’ll be able to salvage loot which you’re able to use to upgrade, repair your ships, or even unlock blueprints for new ships, allowing you to survive that bit longer.  The Alpha Demo also features a comprehensive ship builder, which allows you to create powerful spaceships from base items or items you acquire in Survival mode.

So far so FTL (and that’s not a bad thing), but the much less linear ‘Adventure mode’ in the full game promises some very cool features, with local and online multiplayer, quests, researchable upgrades, the ability to teleport down to alien planets, and more complex interactions with alien races – including diplomacy, alliances and economic trade.

Spacewrights plans to offer you open gameplay mixed with addictive strategic combat – command your ship as you see fit, be an ambassador for your species or wipe out whole alien races.  The choice is your commander.
